Love the clouds. An overcast sky means fish are more likely to have to work harder to find their food in the dark, murky water. Bright colored or scented baits may work better on cloudy days to help the fish find them. Just be sure that the water remains warm so that the fish are moving.

A sharp knife should be kept in the tackle box. This piece of fishing equipment is critically important, and you’ll have endless problems if you don’t bring it with you. Be sure to invest in a high quality knife with a sharp, rust-proof blade.

You don’t want your fishing trip to be memorable because you spent the day freezing in the pouring rain. Know what you’re in for by checking the weather before you plan a trip. Checking a week in advance is good, and so is checking on the day before. If the weather forecast looks like it will be inclement, postpone your trip until you will have fair skies.

Make sure to buy a fishing rod that is very comfortable for you. If you are not comfortable holding the rod and maneuvering with it, then it is not likely you will be successful catching any fish with it. It is a general rule of thumb for the height of your rod to be similar to your height. The weight is a personal preference.

When you are deep sea fishing, watch for signs of fish nearby. Maybe you see wood or debris. Many times fish will be in the area of debris. Another great clue is gulls feeding on smaller fish, which tends to indicate large fish also nearby.

Be mindful of your bait’s color versus the water’s color. You want something that will clash so the fish down there will see your bait. When the water is murky, make sure you use visible colors. By contrast, use darker colors in clear water, as this prevents the bait from blending in with the underwater environment.
